JEE Main Exam Pattern

Knowing the JEE Main exam pattern for 2024 is vital for candidates who want a smooth preparation for JEE. It helps students develop a clear idea of the marking scheme, distribution of questions, sectional weightage and exam duration. There are three papers instead of two. Paper 1 is for students aspiring for B.E./B. Tech courses in NITs, IIITs, DTU, and other GFTIs, whereas Paper 2A is for B.Arch. Paper 2B is for B.Planning courses offered by these institutes.

Understanding the exam pattern enables candidates to gain a valuable opinion about the whole exam structure. Therefore, students are advised to get a complete overview of the paper pattern and devise a suitable study plan or strategy for better results.

JEE Main Paper 1 comprises Maths, Physics, and Chemistry, whereas Paper 2A has Maths, Aptitude, and Drawing Tests. Paper 2B will consist of Mathematics, Aptitude and Planning-based questions. The candidates can attempt the test in either one or both sessions. On the same lines as last year, there will be 90 questions overall, with candidates getting to attempt a total of 75 questions. The total mark allotted is 300.

All the papers are entirely computer-based online tests, whereas the Paper 2A drawing section is conducted offline in a pen and paper-based mode. The exam duration for all three Papers is 3 hours.

JEE Main Paper 1 (B.E or B.Tech Courses)

JEE Main Syllabus

While the JEE Main syllabus is mainly mapped according to the NCERT textbooks, NTA prescribes a separate JEE syllabus. It comprises topics covered in Classes 11 and 12, including subjects such as Maths, Physics and Chemistry.

The syllabus for JEE Main 2024 looks to be the same as the previous years. There is no reduction.

Students can also refer to the subject-wise detailed syllabus of JEE Main from the links given below.

The questions in the JEE Main exam are easy but require a lot of smart work, practice and adequate preparation. One of the significant challenges generally faced by students is the time constraint. To overcome this, students need to develop adept problem-solving skills as well as time management skills to ensure the successful completion of the examination. Moreover, before starting their preparations, students should acquire an in-depth and clear understanding of each and every topic covered in the syllabus of JEE Main.

Therefore, candidates should read the syllabus at least once before studying. This exercise will help them gain insight into all the important chapters or topics on which they should focus on. Additionally, they can formulate a proper study plan accordingly.

Moreover, to cater to the decision of various Boards across the country about the reduction in the syllabus, the NTA has determined to provide a choice in one Section of each Subject of Paper 1 and Part I of Paper 2A and 2B. However, the total number of questions to be attempted will remain the same (Physics -25, Chemistry – 25, and Mathematics – 25), wherever applicable.

Here is the subject-wise breakdown of important chapters for JEE Main 2024. Students need to pay proper attention to these chapters to ace the examination.

JEE Main Mock Test

Since the JEE Main exam can be taken only in the computer-based online test, the conducting authority has set up several practice centres to help engineering aspirants get acquainted with the exam format.

Students can access the mock test for JEE Main online by visiting the website (www.nta.ac.in) for hands-on practice. Earlier, students could also visit the practice centres set up by the National Testing Agency and take the test. This facility might now be available this time. We will keep this space updated when we get the information.

Candidates could take their help and clear their doubts regarding the exam. They can train themselves for the “Computer Based Test (CBT)” mode of examinations. Experienced and professional nodal officers and staff are said to be available at the TPC.

The benefit of taking the mock test is that the pattern of the test is similar or exact to the real JEE Main exam. Therefore, it will have a good impact on the preparation and performance of the candidates.

Importance of JEE Main Mock Test

  • Practising mock tests will help candidates get familiar with the type of questions, marks distribution, difficulty level and the topics relevant to the examination.
  • It helps to evaluate the performance before the final examination. From an in-depth evaluation of the section-wise performance report, a suitable JEE Main preparation strategy can be planned.
  • Regular mock test practice increases students’ speed and accuracy in completing the exam. It familiarises them with the real exam scenario and drives away any nervousness for the test.

JEE Main Previous Year Question Paper with Solutions and Answer Keys

Along with the mock tests, students are also advised to practise the previous years’ JEE Main question papers to boost their chances of success in such a highly competitive entrance exam.

JEE Main Preparation Tips

  • Begin from scratch – Fundamentals play a vital role in JEE Main. Always concentrate on structuring and understanding the basics of all the subjects. When the basics are strong, learning becomes easier.
  • Prepare a timetable – The JEE Main preparation curriculum is extensive. Hence, it should be scheduled to gain the best results. Split the syllabus into different parts according to the benefit. It can be limited to a chapter or a unit. Follow the timetable and avoid distractions in between.
  • Know the syllabus and pattern – For better preparations, the most significant factor is to keep oneself updated with the complete syllabus along with the paper pattern.
  • Befriend books – For JEE Main preparations, NCERT textbooks are a must, no matter which subject it is. Therefore solve NCERT textbooks before moving to other references. Also, remember to choose the right study resources which will help you study productively.

Importance of NCERT Books for JEE Main 2024

NCERT textbooks are essential as far as cracking JEE Main is concerned. These textbooks allow candidates to have a firm grasp of the fundamental concepts discussed in all three subjects. Let us go through the importance of the NCERT curriculum for cracking JEE Main 2024.

JEE Main Chemistry:

NCERT Chemistry textbook is the most helpful resource for JEE Main Preparation. Some of the questions from organic and inorganic chemistry are taken directly from the textbook. So, make sure to study these textbooks thoroughly and get enough practice from solving exercises, question papers and mock tests.

JEE Main Maths:

Math is the toughest paper in the exam. Candidates will need more study material to fully master the concepts. However, they can start with this textbook first. The explanation and exercises given in this book will help students improve their analytical and problem-solving skills.

JEE Main Physics:

Physics paper is a bit tricky, and the NCERT textbook is of minimal help here. However, the best place to start is still the CBSE curriculum which is based on the NCERT syllabus. Make sure to go through the points to ponder section in the textbook thoroughly.
